Discrimination
Many homosexuals will either encounter discrimination in the current UK society, whether its in the social arena or professional/work. Discrimination in the workplace is easier to deal with as there are laws that protect you from discrimination in the work place. In the social arena this is quite a tricky one or un solvable. For example, here are some scenarios where Gay people can be discriminated in:
- You are homosexual and you are queing up to get into a club. The doorman stops you and informs you that you are not going in as you are banned from the club, even though you have never visited the club before.
This is not allowed the doorman must provide details of what incident you are banned from. If you can't reason with the doorman, ask for the manager and if he refuses inform the local authority of this.
- If you are standing at a bar and the barman will not serve you by going and asking people their order even though you have been queuing a long time before you.
Make the barman know that you are next, if he carries on ignoring you make the whole bar know. If this carries on ask for the bar manager or his/her superior. If he refuses to do this then find the bar superior yourself or leave go to another bar and phone in to complain in the morning.
Bullying
Bullying is a kind of discrimination but when it involves teenagers at school this can become a bigger problem than that in an office as its up to the schools/colleges to sort out which can become messy to say the least. Normally bullying at schools will involve an or more than one individual picking on someone/s because of the individual/s ethnic background or as homophobia is still rife in British society, because they are ultimately Gay. Because of this many teenagers don't express their sexuality openly but for the ones who do then this can course problems.
A solution to this for the individual who is getting bullied to make it known to the establishment's superiors (teachers, lecturers etc) of their situation, name the culprits and then the establishment will take it from there. The establishment must act responsibly and thoughtfully and ultimately kill the bullying and if it lingers the bullying can escalate which can make the victim depressed and commit suicide.
Sexual Recognition
A problem a potential homosexual may find is coming to terms wither his or her sexuality. If the individual has always thought he was 'straight' but feeling attraction towards another person of the same sex then this may be complicated further if the individual is is a relationship. Self denial is a typical action an individual might take in this situation or if they are homophobic. There are many organizations you can talk to about this, click here to view a list. It may be the case that are you attracted to a member of the same sex and opposite, this would make you bisexual.
Relationships
Gay relationships are often very open ones where the individuals engage with sexual activities with other people outside the relationship. George Michael has been known to do this, as he was arrested for an incident in a Los Angeles toilet. Many Gay people might not like this and are very intimate with their partners but the other person in the relationship might like the open style of homosexual partnerships. The best thing to do is talk about this to your partner and see if you can work things out. If you cant then I would recommend parting company with each other.
Otherwise Gay relationships are like heterosexual relationships. Anything can happen. |
